The Lion's Gate Portal: An Abundance Practice for August 8

Every year in early August, something shifts. The days are still long, but there is a turning underneath them, a sense that the season is gathering itself toward what comes next. In many spiritual traditions, this window has a name: the Lion's Gate Portal.

The portal is said to open in late July and reach its peak on August 8, when the sun sits in Leo, the sign of the lion, and the star Sirius, long revered as a bringer of abundance and renewal, rises into view in the morning sky. The ancient Egyptians watched for this rising because it heralded the flooding of the Nile, the event that made the land fertile for another year. Abundance, quite literally, followed the star.

In numerology, the date itself carries meaning. Eight is the number of material abundance, personal power, and infinite flow, and on August 8 the calendar aligns as 8/8. Practitioners treat this doubling as an amplifier: a day when intentions around prosperity, confidence, and expansion are believed to land with extra force.

Whether you work with astrology, numerology, or simply the rhythm of the seasons, the invitation is the same. The Lion's Gate is a moment to name what you want more of and to make room for it to arrive.

A Simple Lion's Gate Abundance Practice

You do not need anything elaborate for this. A quiet corner, twenty minutes, and one or two sacred tools are enough.

Clear the space first. Abundance flows into rooms that have room for it. Open a window and pass sacred smoke through the area where you will sit. White sage or palo santo works beautifully here, and if you want to honor the Egyptian roots of this day, frankincense resin is the traditional choice. Its warm, golden scent has been burned in temples for thousands of years as an offering of prosperity. If you have never worked with resin before, our guide to working with resin incense walks you through the charcoal method step by step.

Write your abundance intention as if it is already true. Not "I want financial security" but "I am financially secure, and money moves through my life with ease." The number eight is about flow, so phrase your intention in flowing, present-tense language. Write it by hand. There is something about ink on paper that a note on your phone cannot replicate.

Sit with it at 8:08. Morning or evening, whichever you can keep. Light your incense, hold the paper, read your intention aloud, and then sit in stillness for eight slow breaths. Let the words settle into your body rather than your head.

Leave a signal of welcome. Place the written intention somewhere you will see it daily through the rest of August: tucked into a mirror frame, inside your wallet, under a candle on your altar. The practice does not end when the smoke clears. The daily glimpse is what keeps the intention working.

Sacred Tools for Abundance Work

The tools you choose become part of the intention. Frankincense and myrrh, the resins of temples and offerings, carry centuries of association with wealth and reverence. Sweet, rich incense like Sri Sai Flora fills a room with the kind of fullness that abundance work asks you to imagine. And a clean, cleared space is the foundation beneath all of it.

After the Portal

The Lion's Gate closes in mid-August, but the work you do on 8/8 is a seed, not a finish line. Revisit your written intention at the new moon on August 12 and again at the full moon at the end of the month. Notice what has started moving. Abundance rarely arrives all at once. It gathers, the way the light does in early August, quietly and then unmistakably.

Until then, may your space be clear and your intentions be bold.
