Palo Santo vs White Sage: What's the Difference and When to Use Each

If you're new to smudging and space clearing, you've probably encountered both palo santo and white sage — and wondered which one to use. Both are powerful, both are sacred, and both have devoted followings in the spiritual community. But they work differently, feel different, and serve slightly different purposes.

White Sage

White sage (Salvia apiana) is native to the coastal mountains of California and has been used in Indigenous purification ceremonies for centuries. It produces a dense, earthy, somewhat medicinal smoke that is considered one of the most powerful cleansing agents in the plant kingdom.

White sage is best used when you want to do a deep, thorough clearing — removing stagnant, heavy, or negative energy completely. Think of it as a full reset. After a difficult period, when moving into a new space, or when you want to wipe the energetic slate completely clean.

The scent is strong and unmistakable. Some people find it intense. That intensity is exactly what makes it so effective for major clearing work.

Palo Santo

Palo santo — Spanish for holy wood — is a sacred tree native to South America, particularly Peru and Ecuador. It has been used by shamans and healers for centuries for purification, healing, and spiritual protection. Unlike white sage, palo santo wood is only harvested from trees that have died naturally and been left on the forest floor for years — the sacred properties are said to develop during this time of return to the earth.

Palo santo produces a sweet, warm, slightly citrusy smoke that is immediately calming to the nervous system. It clears energy but also adds something — warmth, protection, inspiration, and peace. It's less of a hard reset and more of a gentle recalibration.

Palo santo is ideal for daily use, meditation, creative work, or any time you want to elevate the energy of a space without stripping it entirely bare.

How to Choose

Use white sage when you need a deep, thorough clearing after a difficult time or in a new space. Use palo santo for daily rituals, meditation, creative work, or to maintain the energy of a space you've already cleared. Many practitioners use both together — sage to clear, palo santo to restore.

There is no wrong choice. Choose the one that calls to you, or use both. Your intuition is your best guide.
